June 6th, 1944, a date etched in history. This year marks the 80th anniversary of Operation Overlord, codenamed D-Day (or as the French call it, Le Dèbarquement)- the Allied invasion of Normandy, France. It stands as a pivotal moment in World War II, a day forever linked to courage, sacrifice, and the pursuit of freedom.

We need to remember the countless soldiers, from nations across the globe, who, that day, braved the English Channel under a storm of fire. Paratroopers dropped behind enemy lines, their bravery a testament to their resolve. Landing craft churned towards fortified beaches, their occupants facing a wall of steel and death. The sands of Normandy, once peaceful, became a crucible of sacrifice, stained with the blood of many young men.

It was the day the tide began to turn. The fight for Normandy was long and bloody, but the foothold established on D-Day laid the groundwork for the liberation of France and ultimately, the defeat of Nazi tyranny.

This June, we approach the 80th anniversary of this day. An anniversary that just might be the last for veterans of that day. So it is important that we honor not just the victory, but the human cost. We remember the fallen, those young men who never saw home again. Their sacrifice bought a future for generations to come, a future where freedom could grow.

The significance of D-Day transcends the battlefield. Not only it is a testament to the power of the human spirit in the face of unimaginable odds. It speaks to the strength found in unity, in nations banding together for a common cause. It should remind all of us of the fragility of peace, and the vigilance required to preserve it.

You could say that the 80th anniversary is not just a commemoration of the past, but a reflection on the present. The world, very different today, still faces its share of struggles. D-Day serves as a beacon to remind us that even in the face of overwhelming odds, courage, unity, and unwavering resolve can overcome challenges.

I can say, unequivocally, that each time I have visited the Normandy beaches, I truly felt the spirit of the men who fell there. The sands of Normandy hold the whispers of a bygone era, a testament to those who fought for freedom.

We honor the dwindling number of veterans who still carry the weight of that day. Their stories, etched with hardship and heroism, are living testaments to the events that unfolded on those Normandy beaches.

This anniversary should be a call to action to all of us. As they pass the torch of remembrance, it becomes our responsibility to ensure their sacrifices are never forgotten.
